Golden Hour on the Med

Best Sunset Spots in Kaş

Kaş faces west over the Mediterranean — every evening brings a front-row seat to one of Turkey's best sunsets.

Kaş is blessed with geography that makes for extraordinary sunsets. The town faces due west across the open Mediterranean, with the tiny Greek island of Meis (Kastellorizo) sitting on the horizon like a stage prop. As the sun drops behind Meis, the sky erupts in colour — oranges, pinks, and purples reflected off the calm water. Here are the six best spots to watch it happen.

1. The Hellenistic Theatre

This is the iconic Kaş sunset experience. The ancient amphitheatre sits on the western edge of town, its stone seats facing directly out to sea. It was built around the 1st century BC to seat 4,000 people, and today it serves as the town's open-air sunset lounge — free entry, always open.

The view is framed perfectly: the Mediterranean stretching to the horizon, Meis island slightly to the right, and the sun sinking straight ahead. In summer, arrive at least 30 minutes early — the theatre fills up with locals and visitors alike. In winter, you may have the entire place to yourself.

2. Çukurbağ Peninsula

For a quieter, more private sunset, walk or drive out along the Çukurbağ Peninsula — the long finger of land that shelters Kaş harbour from the south. The peninsula road winds past boutique hotels, olive groves, and rocky coves, with unobstructed views west. Find a spot on the rocks near the tip and you will have a panoramic sunset with almost no one around.

The walk from town takes about 30-40 minutes, or you can drive and park along the road. Bring a light jacket — it can get breezy on the exposed coastline.

3. Rooftop Bars

Several bars and restaurants in Kaş offer rooftop terraces with sunset views. The advantage here is obvious: a cold drink in hand, music in the background, and a panoramic view without leaving your seat. Hideaway Bar is one of the most popular, but there are several options around the old town. Arrive 30-45 minutes before sunset to get a good table — they fill up fast in summer.

Expect to pay a premium for the setting, but the combination of a cocktail, sunset, and sea view is hard to beat.

4. Big Pebble Beach (Büyük Çakıl)

If you want to combine a late-afternoon swim with sunset, Büyük Çakıl is the place. This is the main town beach, a five-minute walk east of the centre. The pebble shore faces south-west, so the setting sun lights up the water and the surrounding cliffs. Sit on the pebbles or grab a lounger from the beach bar, take a final dip as the light turns golden, and dry off while the sky changes colour.

5. The Harbour Promenade

The waterfront promenade along the harbour is where locals take their evening walk. As sunset approaches, the restaurants and cafés lining the marina glow in warm light, and the boats bobbing in the harbour catch the golden reflections. It is not the most dramatic viewpoint, but it is atmospheric — the sound of water, the smell of grilling fish, and a gentle evening breeze.

Walk the full length of the promenade and find a bench or a harbourside café to settle into.

6. Your Terrace at Larex Pansiyon

Sometimes the best sunset spot is the one you do not need to walk to. Larex Pansiyon offers a terrace where you can watch the evening light change over the rooftops of Kaş with a cup of tea in hand. After a long day of exploring, there is something deeply satisfying about watching the sunset from the comfort of your own accommodation — no crowds, no noise, just the sky.

Sunset Times by Season

Summer (Jun–Aug) 7:30 – 8:15 PM

Winter (Dec–Feb) 5:15 – 5:45 PM
Spring (Mar–May) 6:00 – 7:30 PM

Photography Tips

  • Arrive early: The best light often comes 20-30 minutes before the sun actually sets. The "golden hour" glow on the old town and sea is beautiful.
  • Stay late: Do not leave the moment the sun dips below the horizon. The 10-15 minutes after sunset often produce the most dramatic colours in the sky.
  • Include foreground: The theatre seats, a silhouetted boat, or a café table with a drink all add depth and context to your sunset photos.
  • Phone is fine: Modern smartphones handle sunset light well. Tap the brightest part of the sky to expose for the colours rather than the dark foreground.
