10 Things to Do in Kaş in Winter

Kaş in winter is quiet, affordable, and full of things to do — here are ten of the best.

Most visitors think of Kaş as a summer destination, but the off-season — roughly November through March — has a charm all its own. The crowds vanish, the light turns golden, and the town returns to its laid-back fishing-village roots. Here are ten things that make a winter trip to Kaş well worth it.

1. Hike the Lycian Way

The Lycian Way is one of the world's great long-distance trails, and winter is arguably the best season to walk it. Summer temperatures can exceed 40°C on exposed sections, but from November to March you get cooler air (12-18°C), clear skies, and wildflowers starting from February. The stretch from Kaş to Kalkan is especially scenic, with views over the Mediterranean and down to Kaputaş Beach.

Pack layers, sturdy boots, and plenty of water. Trails can be muddy after rain, but the reward is having these ancient paths almost entirely to yourself.

2. Go Diving

Kaş is Turkey's scuba diving capital, and winter brings a surprising advantage: the best underwater visibility of the year. With water temperatures around 16-18°C and a good wetsuit, you can explore canyon dives, reef walls, and even a sunken aircraft wreck with 30+ metres of visibility. Several dive centres operate year-round and offer smaller group sizes in winter.

Whether you are a certified diver or a complete beginner, winter is a great time to get in the water. Discover scuba courses are available, and the quieter conditions mean more personal attention from your instructor.

3. Visit Myra & the Church of St Nicholas

The ancient Lycian city of Myra is a 45-minute drive east, near the town of Demre. The rock-cut tombs carved into the cliff face are spectacular, and the adjacent Church of St Nicholas — the real Santa Claus — is a fascinating piece of early Christian history. In winter you can explore both sites without the summer coach-tour crowds, and entrance fees remain the same.

If you visit in December, the connection to Santa Claus feels especially apt. A ceremony is held at the church each year on 6 December to honour St Nicholas. Combine this with a stop at the Demre greenhouses for fresh local produce on the drive back.

4. Explore Patara Ruins Without Crowds

Patara is home to a Lycian parliament building, a triumphal arch, a Roman theatre, and an 18-kilometre beach. In summer this is one of the busiest archaeological sites on the coast; in winter, you might share it with a handful of visitors. The cooler temperatures make walking the extensive site far more pleasant, and the winter light is beautiful for photography.

The ruins are spread over a large area, so allow at least two hours. The parliament building is considered the world's first democratic assembly — a significant piece of history. The beach is also open in winter, though swimming is only for the brave.

5. Take a Turkish Cooking Class

Several restaurants and local hosts in Kaş offer cooking workshops where you learn to prepare dishes like mantı (Turkish ravioli), gözleme (stuffed flatbread), and regional meze. A cooking class is the perfect rainy-day activity and gives you skills you can take home. Ask your hotel or check local social media groups for current offerings.

Classes usually include a trip to the local market to buy fresh ingredients, followed by a hands-on cooking session and a shared meal. It is a social, memorable way to spend a winter afternoon.

6. Walk the Old Town & Shop Local

The narrow streets of Kaş old town are at their most atmospheric in winter. Without the summer crowds, you can browse the local boutiques, textile shops, and jewellery makers at your own pace. Shopkeepers have more time to chat, and you may find better deals on handcrafted goods. The weekly Friday market also runs year-round.

7. Day Trip to Xanthos & Letoon (UNESCO)

The twin UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Xanthos and Letoon are about an hour's drive from Kaş. Xanthos was the capital of ancient Lycia, with impressive pillar tombs, a Roman theatre, and Byzantine mosaics. Letoon, a short drive away, was the sacred centre with three temples. These are among the most important archaeological sites in Turkey, and in winter you can explore them in near solitude.

8. Enjoy a Turkish Bath (Hamam)

A hamam session is one of the great Turkish experiences, and winter is the ideal time to enjoy it. The contrast of the cold outside air and the steamy warmth inside makes it feel even more luxurious. Kaş has a couple of traditional hamams offering scrub, foam massage, and tea. It is an excellent way to warm up after a day of hiking or sightseeing.

A typical session lasts 45-60 minutes and includes a steam room, a vigorous exfoliating scrub, and a foam massage on a heated marble slab. You leave feeling completely renewed. Expect to pay around 300-500 TL depending on the services you choose.

9. Watch the Sunset from the Amphitheatre

The small Hellenistic theatre on the western edge of town faces directly out to sea, with the Greek island of Meis (Kastellorizo) on the horizon. Sunset from here is magical in any season, but in winter the sky tends to produce richer colours — deep oranges, pinks, and purples. You will likely have the ancient stone seats to yourself. Sunset is around 5:30 PM in December, so you do not need to wait until late evening.

10. Read & Relax in Kaş Cafés

Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing at all. Kaş has a wonderful café culture — small, independently-run places serving Turkish tea, strong coffee, and home-baked pastries. In winter, the pace slows down and the cafés become cosy retreats. Bring a book, settle in by a window overlooking the harbour, and let the hours pass. Several cafés have wood stoves or heaters that make even a rainy afternoon feel inviting.

Winter Weather in Kaş

Kaş enjoys a Mediterranean climate, so even winter is mild compared to northern Europe. Expect daytime temperatures between 10°C and 18°C, dropping to around 5-8°C at night. Rain is possible — December and January are the wettest months — but most days have at least some sunshine. Pack layers, a waterproof jacket, and comfortable walking shoes. Snow is extremely rare at sea level.

The key advantage of winter weather is the comfort it brings to outdoor activities. Hiking and sightseeing are far more pleasant at 15°C than at 35°C. The air is clearer too, which means sharper views across the Mediterranean and better conditions for photography.
